Dr. Oz Partners with Metamucil for 'Heart-to-Heart' Sweepstakes

In honor of Heart Health Month, Dr. Oz has teamed up once again with Procter & Gamble’s fiber supplement, Metamucil. Fans can enter for a chance to meet the famous doctor and attend a taping of his show. Dr. Oz will offer tips during his February 29th show about proactive heart care, such as taking a psyllium fiber supplement to lower LDL cholesterol. This initiative follows after a successful run in 2011 when more than 80,000 fans entered the contest; the first 1,000 entries receiving Metamucil coupons. read more

McNeil Prepares Market Return for Key OTC Products in 2012

After suffering a 6.7% decline in 2011 for their over-the-counter business unit, Johnson & Johnson is planning a return to the marketplace. According to a Drug Store News report, Chairman and CEO William Weldon admitted that “reclaiming lost marketshare across its OTC franchises will be an uphill battle.” However, he confirmed during the Q4 earnings call that several products have already returned to store shelves, including some with new packaging innovations, such as a flow-restrictor to reduce children’s dosing errors. read more

Cough and Cold OTC Market to See Stable Growth in Sales

From 2007 to 2012, the Cough and Cold OTC industry will increase about 1.2% annually to $2.3 billion in revenue, according to a new report from IBISWorld. This can be attributed to several factors, including “occurrence and severity of cold and flu seasons, and changes in private health insurance coverage.” The research also found that private labels will become more popular among consumers, thus they will continue to be a source of competition to the industry. read more

Pharmacists Still Underutilized Despite Extensive Knowledge

Only approximately 1 in 3 consumers (35%) ask a pharmacist questions regarding an OTC medication, compared to half of those (51%) filling a prescription product. The survey, sponsored by vitamin and supplement brand Nature Made, further revealed that just 1 in 5 visitors to a retail store / pharmacy (23%) inquire about vitamins and supplements. read more

FDA Requirements Not Enough Regarding Safety of Supplements

A draft guidance by the FDA for dietary supplement manufacturers are “too weak,” wrote Dr. Pieter Cohen in a recent issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. According to a Medpage Today article, the Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School stated that the agency has not enforced part of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) as manufacturers can use historical data instead of clinical trials and are not required to submit both positive and negative data. read more

Supplement Advertisers Warned for Non-Compliant Advertising

The Natural Products Foundation (NPF) alerted the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to 22 dietary supplement advertisers that were not in compliance with marketing regulations. The violative advertisers were first notified by the NPF as part of their Truth in Advertising program, a proactive effort at self-regulation. After they failed to modify their materials, the NPF referred the matter to the FTC. read more
