News From DTC Perspectives - PhRMA's Incrementalism

On Dec 10, some modifications were announced to the DTC PhRMA 2006 code. The original code had good intent and did address some of the criticisms of DTC. The latest changes, of course, should have been in the original code. They are fairly obvious and somehow were too “radical” to appear in the original.

News from DTC Perspectives - PhRMA Announces Enhanced DTC Guidelines

PhRMA has revised its three-year-old Guiding Principles for DTC advertising, and will make the changes effective March 2, 2009. The trade association noted that the revisions are a response to “feedback from physician groups, policymakers and other stakeholders,” according to a press release posted Dec. 10 on its Web site. PhRMA’s revisions are an ongoing effort to continue the educational benefit of DTC, as well as to “renew our commitment to work with the Food and Drug Administration and healthcare professionals,” said Billy Tauzin, read more

In these troubled times for pharmaceutical companies, some CEO’s are becoming publicly more critical of industry practices. One is Roche CEO, William Burns. At a Financial Times conference in London on 12/2, Reuters reported Mr. Burns said DTC was the “single worst decision for the industry.” He said this because he apparently believes DTC hurts the credibility of industry claims that it is spending more on R&D than promotion. read more

The Wall Street Journal's Melinda Beck wrote a fascinating column (11/18) on the power of suggestion. Titled “When Drug Labels Make You Sick”, Ms. Beck explores the little studied issue of how reading the litany of side effects actually can make you more prone to disease. The FDA is rightly concerned with informing consumers of the risks they take when beginning use of an Rx drug. All of us are entitled to know if the drugs we are prescribed can kill us or cause debilitating side effects. read more
