GSK Lights Up New Nicorette Campaign

GSK launched a new $15 million campaign for its OTC nicotine gum Nicorette during primetime TV on December 7th. The campaign, which features the tagline "Quitting Sucks. Nicorette Makes It Suck Less," were created by TBWA\Chiat\Day and launched on ABC, CBS, CW, and NBC and will air until April. The campaign also features print ads with "an open letter to cigarette lovers." These "letters" will run in national magazines such as ESPN, People, Time, and Entertainment Weekly.

Merck OTC Heartburn Treatment Receives FDA Approval

San Diego-based pharmaceutical company Santarus received regulatory approval Dec. 1 for its OTC heartburn drug Zegerid. The OTC drug, licensed to Schering-Plough Health Care Products (now a unit of Merck), failed be to approved by the FDA last January. read more

WebMD Founder, Dr. Oz to Launch Web 3.0 Healthcare Platform

Jeff Arnold, founder of WebMD, has partnered with health expert and TV host Dr. Mehmet Oz to launch Sharecare Inc., a Web 3.0 platform organizing and answering health-related questions for consumers. Additional investors in the new venture include Discovery Communications, Harpo Productions, Sony Pictures Television and HSW International, a company that develops and operates Internet businesses. read more

Bayer Sued for False Claims in Men's One A Day Multivitamin Advertising

The Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) has filed a lawsuit against Bayer over what the organization says are false claims made in the advertising for Bayer’s Men’s One A Day Multivitamins. The lawsuit, filed with the Superior Court of California, claims that Bayer’s One A Day Men’s Multivitamins do not “support prostate health nor reduce the risk of prostate cancer,” despite the fact that Bayer's advertising efforts make these claims, according to a statement issued by the CSPI. read more

OTC Manufacturers Nearly Included in Proposed Tax Legislation

In proposed legislation aimed at medical device manufacturers, Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, had thoughts about including manufacturers of over-the-counter products in new tax rules that would help fund comprehensive healthcare reform. According to the trade publication Adweek, the Senate committee decided against such measures for OTC products after receiving pressure from Republicans and industry members. Baucus did, however, leave a $4 billion-a-year tax on the medical devices industry in his proposal. read more
