FDA Requirements Not Enough Regarding Safety of Supplements

A draft guidance by the FDA for dietary supplement manufacturers are “too weak,” wrote Dr. Pieter Cohen in a recent issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. According to a Medpage Today article, the Assistant Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School stated that the agency has not enforced part of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act (DSHEA) as manufacturers can use historical data instead of clinical trials and are not required to submit both positive and negative data.
